Welcome Message

Welcome to the Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology. I welcome you to the Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. This Department was formerly known as the Department of Biological Sciences. Teaching and Research started at the Department in 1995. The Department is known for high quality education in the Biological Sciences. It maintains collaborative ties with institutions within and outside the country. The Department is a leading academic centre with well qualified and motivated staff. Our academic achievement, culminating in our student’s intellectual achievement as well as staff research output is outstanding.

 

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT/UNIT

Sequel to the establishment of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in 1993 by the Edict 48, 1992 of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences was created in 1995/1996 Academic session. The Department consisted of Botany, Zoology and Chemistry Programmes.

During the 1997/1998 academic session, the Department of Chemical Sciences became a Department on its own while the remaining Biological Sciences had Botany and Zoology programmes. These programmes were split during 2011/2012 Academic session to stand on their own. Also, with the approval of the National Universities Commission, Zoology Department was renamed Zoology and Environmental Biology.

VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT

Sequel to the establishment of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in 1993 by the Edict 48, 1992 of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences was created in 1995/1996 Academic session. The Department consisted of Botany, Zoology and Chemistry Programmes.

During the 1997/1998 academic session, the Department of Chemical Sciences became a Department on its own while the remaining Biological Sciences had Botany and Zoology programmes. These programmes were split during 2011/2012 Academic session to stand on their own. Also, with the approval of the National Universities Commission, Zoology Department was renamed Zoology and Environmental Biology.

In tandem with the philosophy of the University, the Zoology and Environmental Biology Programme was designed to inculcate theoretical and practical knowledge of Animal Biology and Environmental Science in the students. This is vital to understanding nature in relation to its biotic and abiotic components, and highlighting the concepts of biodiversity, conservation, environmental management, and eco-toxicology.

DETAIL OF DEPARTMENTAL AWARDS, PRIZES AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Award: Mr Prince Chigorim Ubiaru (Assistant Lecturer) won TetFund award to study PhD (Parasitology) in the University of Glasglow, UK.

Achievement: Mrs Onyinyechi Gladys Adetunji (Nee Onyele) was the best graduating student of this University in the 2016/2017 session with a CGPA of 4.85 on a 5 point scale.
