The Mission of Department of plant Science and Biotechnology, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike is to provide high quality practical training to students to become professionally competent and confident persons capable of self-employment to develop environment-friendly and people-sensitive technologies and to enhance the well-being of the people through extension and other interventions. By so doing, the Nigerian people and the entire world are being served.
The philosophy for our degree programme is to produce graduates with in-depth knowledge in both theory and practical. The degree programme of Plant Science and Biotechnology at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike is to develop properly, highly trained professionals, who are well grounded on theoretical and practical academic works which will enable them to cope with a broad spectrum of challenges of self-reliance in industrialization, national development and be of immense value to a wide range of global public and private enterprises.
The programme is also designed to provide graduates/students with the necessary mental and physical resources for the scientific solution of the nation’s needs of material goods, services and other local and global agricultural problems.
The hallmark of the above is the adoption of an effective techniques of instruction through the intensive lecturers, tutorials, laboratory practicals and exposure of students to actual scientific practices through the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)/Industrial Training (IT).
The Head of Department, appointed by the Vice – Chancellor directly incharge of the overall responsibility, organization, co-ordination and supervision of academic activities and day to day running of theDepartment. The Head of Department reports and takes instruction from the Dean of the College.
There is a Departmental Board, made up of all academic staff in the Department. The Departmental Board meets regularly and takes major decisions affecting the Department. The Department adopts a committee system e.g. Examination and Time-Table, Post Graduate, Seminars and Conferences, Staff Appraisal etc. Staff of the Department are always involved in the general administration of the Department.
