The Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology (PSB) was carved out of the former Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences under the leadership of Professor Hilary OdoEdeoga. It is worthy to note that the Department of Biological Sciences which was made up of Zoology and Botany started as a programme in the College of Natural and applied Sciences (CNAS) since the inception of the University. The name change from Botany to Plant Science and Biotechnology was in response to modern trends in the field of Plant Science and to expose our student to plant biotechnology trends of the 21st century.

The Department offers a wide range of aspects in Plants Science and Biotechnology relevant to Environment, Agriculture and industry from the molecular level up to whole plant bases.

Our graduates acquire a sound background that is deeply rooted in laboratory and field based experience in the broad array of disciplines within Plant Science and Biotechnology. These include Economic Botany, Medicinal Plants and Pharmacognosy, Plant Pathology, Mycology, Bioremediation, Plant Anatomy and Taxonomy, Cytogenetics, Plant Physiology, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics.

History of the Department

The department started as a degree awarding programme in 1998 as Botany Department in 2011/2012 it became plant sciences and biotechnology

The Department has an academic staff strength of 20 which include 3 Professors, 10 Technologists and 4 Administrative staff. The current Head of Department is Dr Garuba Omosun an Associate Professor.


The Mission of Department of plant Science and Biotechnology, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike is to provide high quality practical training to students to become professionally competent and confident persons capable of self-employment to develop environment-friendly and people-sensitive technologies and to enhance the well-being of the people through extension and other interventions. By so doing, the Nigerian people and the entire world are being served.

Philosophy of the Department

The philosophy for our degree programme is to produce graduates with in-depth knowledge in both theory and practical. The degree programme of Plant Science and Biotechnology at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike is to develop properly, highly trained professionals, who are well grounded on theoretical and practical academic works which will enable them to cope with a broad spectrum of challenges of self-reliance in industrialization, national development and be of immense value to a wide range of global public and private enterprises.

The programme is also designed to provide graduates/students with the necessary mental and physical resources for the scientific solution of the nation’s needs of material goods, services and other local and global agricultural problems.

The hallmark of the above is the adoption of an effective techniques of instruction through the intensive lecturers, tutorials, laboratory practicals and exposure of students to actualscientific practices through the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)/Industrial Training (IT).

To provide highly trained professionals who can cope with a broad spectrum of challenges in industry and national developmental Challenges in public and private enterprises

Organizational Structure

The Head of Department, appointed by the Vice – Chancellor directly incharge of the overall responsibility, organization, co-ordination and supervision of academic activities and day to day running of theDepartment. The Head of Department reports and takes instruction from the Dean of the College.

There is a Departmental Board, made up of all academic staff in the Department. The Departmental Board meets regularly and takes major decisions affecting the Department. The Department adopts a committee system e.g. Examination and Time-Table, Post Graduate, Seminars and Conferences, Staff Appraisal etc. Staff of the Department are always involved in the general administration of the Department.

Admission Requirement

To be admitted into the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, the candidate would have satisfied the University Minimum requirement. The candidates should in addition, have the UME requirements of (five) Ordinary Level Credit Pass in West African Senior Secondary Certificate (WASC), General Certificate of Education (GCE) or National Examination CouncilOrdinary Level (NECO) in not more than two sittings. The credit passes must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A pass in JAMB UME that meets the Departmental cut off mark, determined by the University and Post UME Screening test are required.

Direct entry students admission is based on combination of O’Level results with the following qualifications:-

  • Two A level passes in relevant subjects.
  • OND, ND, NCE and HND, Upper Credit or Good Lower Credit.
  • Candidates with qualification in OND, HND and NCE in Upper Credit may be admitted in 200 Level, while candidates with HND Upper Credit and NCE with distinction may be admitted in 300 level.

    Duration of Programme

    The Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology runs a four (4) year programme. In the first two years (100 and 200 levels), College of Natural Science (COLNAS) general courses and University general courses are covered while the first Semester, of third year (300 level core departmental courses are commenced.

    In the Second Semester of third year, students embark on SIWES programme. During this period, students are exposed to off-Campus outreach linkage programmes in industries, institutions. Biotechnological companies, research establishments including health institutes where they gain practical experiences in their area of study. The programme lasts for six months, after which the students writes a report of their experience during the exposure. It is important to stress here that students on IT are not allowed to register or write exams during the third year second semester.

    In 400 level, students complete their departmental core courses, as well as conduct a research project in any sub-discipline of the Department. A report is written of the procedure and finding of the research project which is examined by an appointed external examiner.

    Carrer Opportunities

    The technical advancement of any country depends to a large extent on the scientific ability of her citizens with great analytical tools to finding solutions to economic problems of agriculture. The department will train the students to be able to manage their own farms efficiently and economically. Equip the students to become self-employable as scientists and agricultural management consultants and analysts. B.Sc Degree programme in Plant Science and Biotechnology will affords the graduates, the opportunity of rendering service in areas like Industrial standardization, Factory inspection, Transport, Agriculture, Teaching/Research in the Universities, Polytechnics and Research Institutes, Environmental Management and Biotechnology

    Presently, Biotechnology is the in-thing globally and as such graduates of Plant Science and Biotechnology are valuable human resources in large Agricultural Biotechnology companies all over the world. In such companies, skills in tissue culture and transformation, Recombinant DNA technology and Molecular Biology, protein and nucleic acid biochemistry, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics are particularly useful.
